Young farmers showcase accomplishments at Taipei exhibition

Taipei, Oct. 11 (CNA) During the National Day holiday, 100 young farmers showcased their achievements in adopting new technologies and marketing strategies under a Council of Agriculture (COA) incentive program, at an exhibition in Taipei which attracted thousands of visitors. At the exhibition, the farmers, aged between 18 and 45, displayed fruits and vegetables, processed farm products and introduced newly developed Internet market networks. The incentive program was introduced in 2013 to encourage young people to develop careers in agriculture, Minister of Council of Agriculture Chen Bao-ji (???) said on Saturday. Every year, the COA selects 100 young farmers from those who submit agricultural career plans to the council, who then receive professional consultations and assistance to realize their plans for a two year period. The selected farmers are also eligible to receive three-year non-interest loans and government subsidies, according to the minister. Over the past two years, the council has utilized 5,660 farming experts, advanced agricultural technology and marketing strategies to help the first 100 selected farmers, who have also qualified for special loans valued at NT$139 million (US$4.2 million), he added. Several of the young farmers attending the exhibition discussed their farming experiences. A handful have even resigned from jobs in the city and returned to family farms and despite having yet to see big profits, they expressed satisfaction at growing fruits and vegetables with their own hands. These young farmers have introduced the virtual market to rural communities and many have successfully developed their own brands. The Internet marketing platform, Shoufeng Image, which was initiated by a group of selected farmers in Hualien, helps small farms sell produce directly to customers thereby making them more profitable.
