Head of U.S. Republican National Committee to attend 10-10 events

Taipei, Oct. 8 (CNA) The chairman of the U.S. Republican National Committee is scheduled to arrive Thursday to attend National Day celebrations later this week to mark the Republic of China's 104th founding anniversary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Reince Priebus is leading a delegation from the Republican Party on a visit that will last until Oct. 11, the ministry said in a statement. During the visit, the delegation members will attend the National Day celebrations, which will include a reception to take place at the Taipei Guest House Oct. 10, said the ministry, which is organizing the event. The delegation is also scheduled to meet with President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and call on other government officials to learn more about the latest developments in Taiwan's foreign relations, national defense and ties with China, the ministry said. The visit is expected to advance the partnership between Taiwan and the U.S., it added. The delegation is one of 38 foreign delegations that comprise 355 visitors who will attend the event, according to the ministry. Visitors from Taiwan's diplomatic allies include Honduras Vice President Ricardo Antonio Alvarez Arias, Paraguay Vice President Juan Eudes Afara Maciel, Swaziland Deputy Prime Minister Paul Dlamini, and Governor-General of the Solomon Islands Sir Frank Ofagioro Kabui, the ministry went on. Among the visitors from the U.S. is Connecticut Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, it added. Parliamentary delegations from Japan, South Korea and Scotland will also attend the celebration, according to the ministry. The Saturday reception will follow a National Day celebration to be held in the plaza in front of the Presidential Office earlier in the day, which will feature a series of performances by the military and other activities.
