Average life expectancy slightly down year-on-year

Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) The life expectancy of Taiwanese reached an average 79.84 years in 2014, slightly lower than the level of 80.02 years recorded the previous year, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday. In 2014, the life expectancy of male nationals averaged 76.72, while that of females reached 83.19, the ministry said. Upon reaching the age of 65, Taiwanese men and women tend to live for a further 17.91 and 21.33 years, respectively, it said. The figures represented the first time that Taiwanese women's life expectancy has dropped in 10 years, it said. The decrease is a result of a growing number of deaths in the population aged 65 years or older, the ministry explained, adding, however, that the fluctuation is insignificant in a long-term upward trend in life expectancy.
