Dujuan downgraded to tropical storm

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Typhoon Dujuan has weakened in intensity and was downgraded to a tropical storm Tuesday afternoon, the Central Weather Bureau said. The bureau lifted the land warning on Dujuan for Taiwan proper at 11:30 a.m. and for the outlying islands of Penghu and Matsu at 2 p.m. The outlying island of Kinmen just off China's southeastern coast, however, should remain on alert for heavy rain and strong winds, the bureau said. At 2 p.m., Dujuan was centered 130 kilometers northwest of Kinmen, moving at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour in a northwesterly direction. With a radius of 200 km, the storm's maximum sustained winds were estimated at 101 kph, with gusts of up to 126 kph, according to bureau data. The bureau predicted that Dujuan's intensity will continue to weaken and its radius will also become smaller as it moves further into China. (By Wang Shu-fen and Y.F. Low)
