President to hold teleconference with members of European Parliament

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) will talk about his efforts to improve cross-Taiwan Strait relations and his dedication to maintaining peace in the Asia-Pacific during a teleconference with members of the European Parliament (EP) Tuesday. Ma's address will last for 20 minutes, after which he will take on two or three rounds of questions from the participants in the one-hour teleconference, which will start at 5 p.m., the Presidential Office said. It is understood that Ma will touch on his efforts to improve bilateral ties between Taiwan and China since he assumed office in 2008. The warming of cross-strait relations since then has given Taiwan more room for maneuver in promoting relations with the international community. Ma is hoping that the teleconference will help promote Europe's understanding of Taiwan-Europe relations, cross-Taiwan Strait relations and the Republic of China's efforts to promote peace in the Asia-Pacific region, the Presidential Office said. Ma was invited by Werner Langen, chairman of the European Parliament-Taiwan Friendship Group, to make the address. It will be the first time since he took office in 2008 for Ma to hold a teleconference with members of the European Parliament, although he has done so with several U.S.-based think tanks and universities over the years.
