Municipalities announce school, office closures for Monday evening

Taipei, Sept. 28 (CNA) Most municipalities in Taiwan announced school and office closures for Monday evening in anticipation of inclement weather due to Typhoon Dujuan. The affected areas include the northern Taiwan municipalities of Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung, and Yilan County in the northeast, which had already announced a full-day closure the previous day. Other municipalities in northern Taiwan, including Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City and Miaoli County, as well as Hualien County in eastern Taiwan, announced early Monday that schools and offices would be closed that afternoon. The rest of the cities and counties, except for Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, and the outlying counties of Lienchiang and Kinmen, said similar measurements will be implemented after 6 p.m. Monday. As of 4 p.m., the storm was centered 90 kilometers east-northeast of Hualien, moving at a speed of 19 kph in a west-northwesterly direction, according to the Central Weather Bureau. With a radius of 220 km, the storm's maximum sustained winds were estimated at 184 kph, with gusts of up to 227 kph, bureau data showed. Dujuan could make landfall somewhere between Yilan and Hualien counties in eastern Taiwan later that evening, bringing heavy rainfall and strong gusting wind islandwide, the bureau said.
