Hung reaffirms commitment to presidential candidacy

Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) Hung Hsiu-chu (???), deputy legislative speaker and the ruling Kuomintang's presidential candidate, on Thursday deflected rumors that she may be replaced ahead of the election, reiterating that she is fully committed to running for president. Wang Hung-wei (???), spokesperson for Hung's campaign office, said in a written statement that Hung is in high spirits and her ratings have been improving in recent opinion polls. The KMT is solidly behind Hung, with many party heavyweights, including KMT Chairman Eric Chu (???), declaring their full support for her, Wang said. Wang also dismissed as "nonsense" a comment by opposition Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chen Chi-mai (???), who said earlier in the day that Hung should let the electorate know if she planned to quit the race and should stop accepting campaign donations if that was the case.
