South Africa pulls some troops from Congo after violations

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- The South African military says it is withdrawing some of its peacekeepers from a United Nations mission in Congo because they violated disciplinary codes.

The military said in a statement Thursday that the troops were deployed in eastern Congo as part of a unit with a mandate to fight rebel groups there.

The statement does not say how many South African military personnel are being withdrawn nor does it specify their alleged wrongdoing. It says only that they compromised the security of other South African troops and will face military prosecution.
