About 5,000 overseas Chinese to return to vote in 2016

Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) About 5,000 overseas Chinese are expected to come to Taiwan and vote in Taiwan's 2016 presidential election, according to Steven Chen, minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council. Chen said that to take part in the presidential election, overseas Chinese have to register to vote between Sept. 16 and Dec. 7. The exact number of voters coming from overseas will be confirmed on the closing day of registration, he added. In the 2014 local elections, there were roughly 4,300 overseas Chinese voters, which is far fewer than the 1 million or so Taiwanese people in China. Only 4,672 overseas voted in the 2012 presidential election, the lowest number of overseas voters since popular elections began in 1996. Chen therefore called for overseas Chinese, particularly those in Southeast Asia and the United States, to register to vote in 2016. (By Tang Pei-chun and Chloe Hsu)
