Groupon says customers will get full refunds

Taipei, Sept. 23 (CNA) Groupon Taiwan, a group-buying website, notified its patrons Wednesday that unused coupons can be fully refunded, one day after it suspended operations in Taiwan. Groupon Taiwan said that if customers still have coupons for commodity items and travel products, they can continue to use them until the expiration date. If they wish full refunds, they can apply to the customer service center before Oct. 31, it said. Related customer services will be provided until the end of March 2016. In addition, if customers want to return items already delivered, they can contact customer service centers within the seven-day trial period. The Taipei city government said a day earlier that Groupon has notified that it would lay off workers before closing its operations in Taiwan at the end of the year. Groupon entered Taiwan in 2010 and has had some success. However, several group-buying websites have sprung up in Taiwan since 2011 and it has faced steeper competition. U.S.-based Groupon Inc. has announced that it is cutting 1,100 jobs globally in the coming year, representing roughly 10 percent of its total workforce. (By Lo Hsiu-wen and Lilian Wu)
