HTC best smartphone seller in Taiwan in terms of volume

Taipei, Sept. 23 (CNA) Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC Corp. ranked as the best-seller in Taiwan in August in terms of sales volume, industry sources said Wednesday. The sources cited statistics as saying that HTC took a 21.6 percent share in the Taiwan smartphone market, where sales volume totaled 631,000 units in August, down 2.9 percent from a month earlier. The sources said that HTC benefited from a vacuum in August before Apple Inc. launched its next-generation iPhones -- the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus -- in September. The data shows that Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea came in second with a 21.4 percent share, ahead of Taiwanese PC brand Asustek Computer Inc. (??), which has entered the budget smartphone arena to offset the impact of a slow global PC market, with a 13 percent share, Apple with 11.8 percent and Japan's Sony Corp. with a 9.6 percent share. In terms of sales value, Apple took the No.1 title on the back of its expensive high-end iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, claiming a 31.3 percent share in the local smartphone market in August, the sources said. Samsung was the second-largest vendor in sales value last month, taking a 25.2 percent share, followed by HTC with a 15.6 percent share, Sony with 10.8 percent and Asustek with 5.1 percent, the sources added. In August, the HTC Desire 820s, one of the Taiwanese vendor's budget smartphones, was the best seller in terms of single-model sales before Apple's iPhone 6 Plus 64G, iPhone 6 64G, Asustek's Zenfone 2 32G and the HTC Desire 626, the statistics show. The HTC Desire 826 came in sixth, followed by the Samsung Galaxy E7, Sony's M4 Aqua, Samsung's Galaxy J7 and the Galaxy Note 4, according to the statistics. The sources said that except for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the local smartphone market was largely dominated by low-to-mid end models in August. They said that HTC is scheduled to launch two high-end models -- the HTC Butterfly 3 and the HTC One M9+ -- at the end of September, and Sony is expected to introduce its high-end Sony Z5 soon in Taiwan, which is expected to escalate competition in the Android camp.
