Hsinchu science park lays off 241 workers amid sluggish economy

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) The Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park has cut its workforce by a total of 241 people so far in September, 190 of whom are in the LED and display panel industries, which together account for almost 80 percent of the downsizing. The science park administration stated that some companies have been tightening their budgets, while others have been trying to trim costs. The agency also indicated that some companies might have just let go a few unsuitable employees. Meanwhile, the administration said that only one company, a manufacturer of sapphire substrate, has implemented unpaid leave, with the number of people taking unpaid leave increasing from around 110 to more than 140, each of whom takes around 10 days off without pay.
