Tainan sees slowdown in new dengue fever cases: CDC

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Tainan has seen its first slowdown in the number of new daily cases of dengue fever reported, with 347 new cases reported Sunday after a surge in case numbers for 14 weeks in a row, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Monday. The city, which has seen daily increases of roughly 500 cases over the past week, has recorded a total of 11,462 cases of dengue fever since the beginning of summer as of Sunday, the CDC said. Whether there will be a further decline in dengue fever cases depends on the effectiveness of disease control efforts, the agency said. Nationwide, 13,209 people have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease, CDC data showed. Kaohsiung, which has had the second-highest number of dengue fever infections across Taiwan this summer, has accumulated 1,527 cases, the CDC said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
