Changhua County chief launches cleanup drive

Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) Changhua County Magistrate Wei Ming-ku (???) on Friday led a group of volunteers in a campaign to pick up trash and clean up the central county to mark International Cleanup Day. At a ceremony held in the plaza in front of Changhua Christian Hospital, Wei urged Changhua residents to join the drive by removing trash in their neighborhoods, emptying any containers holding water and cutting grass and weeds to prevent dengue fever, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Changhua residents can also help to create a clean and beautiful environment by removing advertising posters stuck on walls and electric poles and tearing down bulletin boards in exchange for rewards, he said. For each 10 kilogram of bulletin boards or 5kg of advertising posters torn down by a resident, NT$100 (US$3.09) worth of shopping vouchers will be issued, Wei said. He launched the cleanup campaign by picking trash in the plaza where the ceremony was held and he was joined by a group of volunteers. (By Wu Jhe-hao and Evelyn Kao)
