Foot-washing event to be held to promote filial piety

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) A massive foot-washing event will be staged in the Presidential Office plaza and the 228 Peace Memorial Park of Taipei on Oct. 11 to foster the traditional family value of filial piety and mark the National Sports Day, event organizers said Thursday. Applications to attend the event are open from Thursday and all applications must be received online through the official website of the Republic of China Sports Federation (ROCSF), which is organizing the annual event for the third year in a row, ROCSF President Chang Chao-kuo (???) said at a press conference. The event aims to heighten awareness among young people of the importance of filial piety and inspire people to treat their parents and other senior citizens better, Chang said. People who have registered for the free event will each receive a health care programs manual, an umbrella, a towel package, a stool and a restaurant voucher worth NT$1,000 (US$30.7), according to Chang. Weng Li-yong (???), the winner of the 20th Golden Melody Awards (???) for Best Taiwanese Male Singer, who serves as the spokesman for the event, was also present at the press conference. During the press conference, in addition to singing songs, Weng also washed his mother's feet in a demonstration of filial piety. Weng said he wanted to devote his efforts to help regain public awareness of filial piety by taking part in the massive foot-washing event. When the foot-washing event was held in 2011 on the site, 4,363 pairs of feet were washed, shattering a Guinness World Record for the most people washing their elders' feet at the same time. Last year, also in October, almost 20,000 participated in the activity in front of the Presidential Office. Chang hoped that when the event is held again on Oct. 11, the day after National Day, it will attract more than 30,000 people. (By Lee Chin-wei and Evelyn Kao)
