Taiwan to test tsunami warning siren Sept. 21

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) Taiwan will test its tsunami alarm Sept. 21 in order to let the public get used to the sound of the alarm, the National Police Agency said Thursday. The agency said that the test alarm will be carried out between 9:40 a.m. and 9:50 a.m. Sept. 21 covering all tsunami-alert areas in Taiwan except for Taipei and Nantou County. There will be no traffic controls during the test, the agency said. The announcement came after a magnitude 8.3 earthquake struck Chile early Thursday. Outside the South American country, French Polynesia in the South Pacific could see the strongest impact from the earthquake, where tsunami waves could reach 1 to 3 meters above the high-tide level. The tsunami alarm will be sounded based on the air raid siren system, the agency said, although rather than a single long air-raid blast, the tsunami warning will consist of a five-second blast interspersed with five seconds of silence, repeated nine times. The lifting of the tsunami warning alarm will be signalled by a 90-second siren blast. (By Liu Chien-pang and Lilian Wu)
