No reports of Taiwanese casualties in powerful earthquake in Chile

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) There have been no reports of Taiwanese casualties in the wake of a magnitude 8.3 earthquake that struck Chile Wednesday local time, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday. According to the information collected by Taiwan's representative office in Chile, "our nationals and officials and staff members with the representative office are reported safe," said ministry spokeswoman Eleanor Wang (???). There are about 1,300 Taiwanese expatriates living in Chile, she said, adding that 900 of them live in the capital of Santiago and few of them live near the epicenter of the earthquake. The magnitude 8.3 earthquake hit off the coast of Chile on Wednesday. Its epicenter was about 46 km west of the city of Illapel and 229km north-northwest of Santiago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor has left at least three dead, foreign media reported. (By Elaine Hou)
