Chile earthquake unlikely to affect Taiwan: CWB

Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) A magnitude 8.3 earthquake that struck Chile early Thursday is unlikely to have an impact on Taiwan, the Central Weather Bureau said. The effects of the earthquake could be limited in Taiwan, even though the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning to much of the Pacific after the temblor struck central Chile at 10:54 p.m. Coordinated Universal Time Wednesday, the CWB said. The tsunami warning mainly targets areas in Central and South America, the bureau explained. According to the center's tsunami alert, French Polynesia in the South Pacific could see the strongest impact from the earthquake, where tsunami waves could reach 1 to 3 meters above the high-tide level. Countries including Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Japan, New Zealand, Hawaii and Russia might expect tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meters, while Taiwan could see waves of less than 0.3 meters, it said.
