SINGAPORE (AP) -- Formula 1 team Manor Marussia says it has signed American driver Alexander Rossi to race in five of the seven remaining events this season, starting in Singapore this weekend.
The 23-year-old Rossi will be the first American to compete in Formula 1 since Scott Speed in 2007. As well as Singapore, Rossi will compete in Japan, the United States, Mexico and Brazil.
Rossi, who is also competing in the GP2 championship, will miss the races in Russia in October and Abu Dhabi in November.
Rossi says "I've been prepared for this opportunity" and that "Singapore is a circuit I really enjoy and the timing of my debut could not be more perfect."
Rossi was a reserve driver for Manor Marussia in the later stages of the 2014 season.
