Magnitude 5.5 earthquake strikes Taiwan

Taipei, Sept. 16 (CNA) A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted eastern Taiwan at 9:09 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). The quake's epicenter was located at sea about 42.6 kilometers northeast of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 17.8km, the bureau's data showed. The quake's intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Heping Township (??) in Hualien and Nan'ao Township (??) in Yilan County, where it measured 5 on Taiwan's 7-tiered intensity scale. It was felt at an intensity of 3 in Hualien City, and 2 in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Taichung. No immediate injuries were reported. (By Kuo Chung-han)
