Taiwan closely monitoring Chinese president's planned visit to U.S.

Taipei, Sept. 15 (CNA) Taiwan is closely following a planned visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) to the United States later this month, during which he is expected to hold a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama, a Taiwanese official said Tuesday. "We're closely following the visit," Eleanor Wang (???), spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said without elaborating, in response to reporters' questions on Xi's visit to the U.S. MOFA sources said, however, that the ministry is monitoring the preparations being made ahead of the visit. It will also closely watch to see if Xi brings up issues related to Taiwan during his meeting with Obama and how Obama responds, they said. In line with the precedent set in previous years, Wang said the U.S. will brief Taiwan on the Xi-Obama meeting. Xi will travel to the U.S. on Sept. 22 and is expected to hold a meeting with Obama during his visit, according to foreign media reports. (By Elaine Hou)
