Taiwanese companies recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) Several Taiwanese companies have been selected to Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) this year, according to the results of the annual DJSI Review released by Switzerland-based sustainable investment company RobecoSAM. China Steel Corp. (CSC, ??), Taiwan's largest steel maker, has been included in the DJSI-World and DJSI-Emerging Markets indexes for the third consecutive year, according to the RobecoSAM rankings. CSC selection as one of only two steel companies to be included in each of the two sub-indexes reflected the advances it has made in operational sustainability, the company said in statement. In being chosen for the sub-indexes, CSC received the highest score of any steel maker considered for the list in the area of environmental protection, the statement said. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, ???), the world's largest contract chip maker, said Monday that it had been named to the Semiconductors and Semiconductor Equipment Industry Group by the DJSI for a third consecutive year, once again affirming the company's commitment to social responsibility. TSMC said it also was selected as one of the DJSI World Index components for the 15th consecutive year. United Microelectronics Corp. (??) said it was selected as a DJSI global component for the eighth consecutive year, and E.Sun Financial Holding Co. (????) said it had become the first and only financial institution in Taiwan to be incorporated in the DJSI. The DJSI World Index tracks the 2,500 largest companies in the world and selects the top performers from each industry based on economic, environmental, and social sustainability indicators as the index's components. This year, 317 corporations were selected as DJSI World Index components and 92 companies from Asian economies such as China, Taiwan, and Singapore were included in the DJSI Emerging markets category.
