Beijing trying to manipulate WWII history: U.S. experts

Washington, Sept. 10 (CNA) The Chinese communists played a very minor role in the Kuomintang-led war of resistance against Japanese aggression but are now trying to manipulate history in their favor, several U.S. experts said Thursday. The issue was raised at a conference titled "Anniversary Politics: Commemorations of WWII in the Asia Pacific in 2015," held at George Washington University in the U.S. capital. Robert Sutter, a professor of Practice of International Affairs at the university, said mainstream opinion in the KMT is that the war of resistance against Japanese aggression should be commemorated and World War II veterans should be honored. While the Republic of China was the mainstay in the war of resistance, Beijing is trying to draw the KMT over to its side and manipulate history, Sutter said. Over the past three years, Beijing has been exerting strong pressure on Japan and hopes that Taiwan would adopt the same stance, he said. Taiwan, however, pays high attention to its relations to Japan and the United States, which makes the situation very complicated and affects domestic politics, he added. Bruce Dickson, a professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University, said compared with the KMT, the Chinese communists played only a very minor role in the war. To promote nationalism, however, Beijing has to interpret history in such a way that Japan's defeat is included as part of China's emergence, he said. (By Tony Liao and Y.F. Low)
