Flowers painting is by Mario Nuzzi: Italian auction house

Taipei, Sept. 5 (CNA) Italian auction house Casa d'Aste Della Rocca on Friday (Italy time) said the flowers painting that it has put up for auction in 2012 is by Mario Nuzzi, instead of Paolo Porpora, as the organizer of an exhibition in Taiwan has said. "We would like to specify that the experts of our Antique Painting Department confirm that the painting we auctioned in May 2012, lot 540, is attributable to Mario Nuzzi, called Mario de' Fiori, as from our catalogue," the auction house wrote in an e-mail to CNA. "We would like to know on which bases the painting is said to be certainly by Paolo Porpora, considering that it is not signed," the company wrote in English. The oil painting of flowers in a vase gained worldwide attention in late August when a Taiwanese boy stumbled and poked a hole in the painting at the "The Face of Leonardo, Images of a Genius" exhibition in Taipei. The organizer and curator of the exhibition have identified the damaged painting as "Flowers" by Porpora (1617-1673), and said it is worth over NT$50 million (US$1.5 million). The organizer has since retracted on its initial statement over the painting's value, saying NT$50 million is only an estimate. Confusion has arisen as to who actually painted the artwork, after it was found that Casa d'Aste Della Rocca put a painting up for auction in 2012 that looks identical to the one being displayed in Taipei. The work was identified as "Composizione con vaso di fiori" by Nuzzi (1603-1673) and valued at a much lower price of between 25,000 and 30,000 euros, according to Casa d'Aste Della Rocca's catalogue and art market websites such as artprice.com. Andrea Rossi, the Italian curator of the exhibition, had insisted that the painting was done by Porpora, and said it had been misidentified by the auction house. David Sun (???), head of the exhibition co-organizer TST Art of Discovery Co., did not answer repeated phone calls from CNA Saturday morning. According to Artprice database, the highest hammer price for a Porpora painting was US$184,870. That painting, which also has a flower motif, was auctioned by Christie's in 2004. (By Christie Chen)
