Cabinet to use reserve fund to aid Tainan's dengue fever battle

Taipei, Sept. 3 (CNA) Premier Mao Chi-kuo (???) has set aside NT$30 million (US$920,000) from the second reserve fund of the Executive Yuan to help Tainan City with dengue fever prevention and control efforts. After receiving a report from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Premier Mao told the health ministry, the Environmental Protection Administration, the Ministry of National Defense, and the Ministry of Education to coordinate their efforts to prevent the disease from spreading. He directly approved the health ministry's application for these funds to bolster dengue fever control efforts. Statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Thursday showed, since May 1, more than 4,300 cases have been reported around the island, and Tainan has been the worst hit with more than 3,800 cases. While the Tainan City Government has been using insecticide spray to eradicate mosquitoes and mosquito larvae, some residents in Tainan also resorted to natural mosquito control methods by using mosquito predators, such as paradise fish and medaka (rice fish) to get rid of mosquito larvae in drains and ponds. The National Taiwan Ocean University and the National Cheng Kung University are cultivating small insectivorous rice fish and will release them into drains and ponds. (By C.C. Wang and Lillian Lin)
