HTC sales dip in August to eight-year low

Taipei, Sept. 3 (CNA) Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp. (???) on Thursday reported its lowest monthly revenue in more than eight years, citing a product transition period and business realignment program. The Taoyuan-based company reported consolidated revenue of NT$6.89 billion (US$212 million) for August, the lowest since it posted NT$6.59 billion in February 2007. On Aug. 13, HTC said it was planning to cut its global workforce by 15 percent -- around 2,300 jobs -- as part of a business realignment plan to seek "significant profitable growth with a leaner and more agile operating model." Chang Chia-lin (???), chief financial officer and president of global sales at HTC, forecast in early August a third-quarter revenue of NT$19 billion to NT$22 billion, citing the company's product transition period. HTC shares closed unchanged at NT$46.60 Thursday in Taipei before the release of its monthly sales data. The stock has dropped about 96 percent since April 2011, when it was at a peak of NT$1,300.
