AIT posts photo of Taiwan's WWII commemorative event

Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) on Wednesday posted a photo on its Facebook page of President Ma Ying-jeou (???) and recipients of Republic of China commemorative medals on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of the World War II. In the photo, Ma poses at the Presidential Office with a group of people who were invited to attend Taiwan's commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of the war. The group includes descendants of late U.S. presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Dwight Eisenhower, WWII veterans and descendants of high-ranking WWII military officers. Mary Jean Eisenhower, Clifton Truman Daniel, and David Roosevelt -- the descendants of the three U.S. presidents -- were presented earlier with medals by Ma, as part of Taiwan's commemorative events. Their three grandfathers provided economic and military assistance to the ROC during the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-1945) -- a part of World War II in which Japan and the other Axis Powers were defeated by the Allied Powers -- and during the subsequent Cold War. Also in the Facebook photo is the Kin Moy, director of the AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic ties. Moy was "honored to join yesterday's ceremony at the Presidential Office," according to the Facebook photo caption. (By Elaine Hou)
