Emerging industries to help drive employment

The nation’s unemployment rate rose to 6.68 percent in July, slightly higher than June but lower than the same period last year, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said on Wednesday.

Compared to last summer, the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) said the drop in unemployment in July can be attributed to recruiters getting an early start this year at looking for fresh graduates, noting that the emerging industries and services are expected to help drive the island’s employment sector this year.

The emerging industries are sectors driven by applications of new technologies or other existing economic activities that undergo renewal and transformation, such as cloud computing, the Internet-of-Things, smart home, 3D printing, big data, and machinery automation.

As part of the government’s “Productivity 4.0” initiation, it is planning to spend NT$36 billion (US$1.11 billion) over the next nine years to elevate Taiwan’s status in the global supply chain. During this period, the government is to spend NT$4 billion (US$133 million) each year on electronics and information technology, metallurgy, transportation, machinery, foodstuffs, textiles, distribution and agriculture, helping to build smart factories to realize massive, but diversified production.

The development agency said the project is expected to draw additional recruits for software and system engineers, and researchers.

According to statistics from online recruiting agencies, there are currently an estimated 1,300 open positions offered through the island’s high-tech companies, including HIWIN Technology Corp., ASE Group, UMC, Hon Hai, Wistron ITS, Digiwin, ITRI, IISI, Everlight Electronics, and so forth.

Among these job offerings, Wistron ITS is looking for fresh recruits and it is advertising NT$60,000 (US$2,000) for the position of software engineers at the company.
