Heavy rain forecast for western Taiwan, offshore counties

Taipei, Aug. 31 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau issued a heavy rain warning Monday, cautioning against sudden downpours in western parts of Taiwan and the offshore counties due to an approaching weather front with moisture-bearing southwestern winds.
Residents of the offshore Penghu County in particular should be on the alert as rainfall of 130 mm or more, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, is expected over the next 24 hours, forecasters said.
Meanwhile, western areas from Taoyuan City in the north to Kaohsiung City in the south and the offshore Kinmen County are likely to see rainfall of up to 50 mm over the same period, the bureau warned.
The rain is expected to abate Thursday as a Pacific high pressure system strengthens, according to the weather bureau.
In the later part of the week, most of Taiwan can expect sunny skies with some clouds, while intermittent afternoon storms or showers may occur in mountainous areas, the bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
