Lien will stress principles of reciprocity and dignity: aide

Taipei, Aug. 30 (CNA) Former vice president Lien Chan (??) will stress the principles of reciprocity and dignity during his trip to China, Lien's aide Chang Jung-kung (???), former deputy secretary-general of the Kuomintang, said Sunday before departing for Beijing. Chang is accompanying Lien to attend China's commemorative activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II next week. Protesters and press representatives crowded the airport terminal and surrounded Chang, as they were not able to approach Lien who was preparing to board from the VIP lounge. Chang asked the press to reserve judgment until they see Lien's performance during his stay in Beijing. Lien is scheduled to attend a military parade in Beijing on Sept. 3, and hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping (???) during his visit. Emphasizing that Lien will stress the principles of reciprocity and dignity, Chang said that commemoration of the War of Resistance against Japan is important to all Chinese, and the commemorative activities are international events. "We will make proper statements on the occasion," he said, adding that while China has its own historical account of the War of Resistance against Japan, "we believe it is better to have a dialogue than to make separate opposing statements." Referring to President Ma Ying-jeou's (???) suggestion that it is not proper for Lien to make this trip, Chang said "we can achieve the same outcome through different approaches." (By C.F.
