Garrett Popcorn to open first Taiwan store

Taipei, Aug. 30 (CNA) Garrett Popcorn Shops from Chicago is expected to open its first store in Taiwan by the end of this year, according to the company's Facebook Taiwan fan page that began operation recently. Garrett Popcorn has posted pictures of the country's famous scenic spots on its official Facebook Taiwan fan page since early July. In one of its replies to a local fan, the company said: "Thank you for your support! See you soon in Taiwan," without offering a timeline or a location. Earlier local reports, without citing sources, have indicated that Garrett Popcorn's first Taiwan store would open in December at the Taipei 101 shopping mall. The expansion plan of the privately held Chicago-based company is considered part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs' latest efforts at attracting foreign investment to Taiwan, which is expected to be formally announced at the 2015 Taiwan Business Alliance Conference on Sept. 2. The ministry, however, declined to confirm the news to reporters. The Chicago Tribune reported in May that Garrett Popcorn plans to open a third store in Hong Kong and enter Taiwan by year-end, as part of its "cautious but optimistic" goal of ultimately setting up shops in China. Founded in 1949, Garrett Popcorn started its business in Chicago and has since gone global, with international stores located in mostly Asian markets such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates. Garrett Popcorn's famous CaramelCrisp popcorn is made fresh daily, onsite in old-fashioned copper kettles, according to the company. (By Huang Chiao-wen and Jeffrey Wu)
