China Times: Facts Lien Chan should not forget

On Sept. 3, China will hold a military parade to mark the "70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War." In Taiwan, former vice president Lien Chan (??) has announced that he will attend the event, despite objections from his party, the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), and the opposition pan-green camp. It is an indisputable fact that the war of resistance against Japanese aggression was led by the Republic of China (ROC) government, because the People's Republic of China had not yet been established at that time. President Ma Ying-jeou (???) repeatedly emphasized this piece of history while addressing many events held this year to commemorate the ROC's victory in the war. The war of resistance against Japan was of course led by the Chinese Nationalist army under the leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (???), with the Nationalist troops bashing the Japanese army in major battlefields. At the same time, we should also pay attention to the contributions made by the Chinese communist troops. Now that the PRC enjoys the advantage of interpreting history, it should return to historical facts and promote cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait on the study and writing of history on the 1937-1945 war of resistance against Japanese aggression. Ten years ago, then Chinese President Hu Jintao (???) pointed out that "The Nationalist government initiated battles at the front line, and the communist party took charge of the rear." Hu admitted that KMT troops organized a series of major battles on the front line to deal a heavy blow to the Japanese army. This commemoration of history will provide an opportunity to allow people on both sides of the strait to feel that they are one family. Lien should remember that his upcoming China trip will only be justified if he can persuade China to return to history and to pay attention to the ROC's contribution to the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, promoting an amiable cross-strait environment and ensuring peace in the Asia-Pacific region. If Lien simply gives his endorsement to Beijing's incomplete historical interpretation, it will undoubtedly cause antipathy among people in Taiwan. (Editorial abstract -- Aug. 29, 2015) (By Y.F.
