AUO: world’s thinnest UHD 4K LCD TV

AUO shows off world’s thinnest UHD 4K LCD TV at Touch Taiwan 2015 on Thursday.

AU Optronics (AUO) isn’t a complete stranger when it involves pressing the limits on display solutions. The company is steadily placing out a wide range of display screens designed for an assortment of consumer devices, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, in-vehicle systems, as well as vending devices.

AUO announced on Thursday during Touch Taiwan 2015 the world’s slimmest Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) 4K LCD TV that boast of an ultra thin profile of 4.7 millimeters, rivaling even Sony’s TRILUMINOS displays.

“The UHD 4K LCD TV panel provides perfectly rendered images with exquisite details and colors,” Katie Chen said, senior specialist at AUO’s corporate communication division.

“Achieving such a feat is something to be reckoned with and we are especially proud to showcase our innovative breakthrough in Taipei,” she said.

In order to attain this record, the Taiwanese display maker adopts glass light guide plates to replace conventional plastic light guide plates. This allows for higher glass hardness, which can simplify panel structure. As a result, the module thickness is significantly reduced and a super sleek and clean back cover design is achieved. Combined with AUO’s GOA (Gate on Array) technology to lower the number of display drive ICs, the ultimate combination of edge-to-edge design and super narrow bezel lends an even classier look to the LCD TV.

AUO is also showcasing a complete series of 55-, 65- and 85-inch Advanced LCD (ALCD) TVs. Among them, its 4000R (4,000mm in diameter) golden curvature display mimics the curvature of the human eye to create an exceptionally immersive viewing experience with its free viewing angle.

“The next-generation quantum dot wide color gamut technology is adopted, and the design of the panels has been adjusted in accordance with the properties of quantum dots to perform its best in colors, with the color saturation exceeding NTSC by 100 percent,” Chen said.

To address professional demands such as audio-video gaming, image designing and video processing, AUO has developed various types of professional monitor displays, including the 35-inch ultra wide curved LCD for desktop monitor with the world’s highest 2000R (2,000mm in diameter) curvature.

With plasma TVs considered as a thing of the past, OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is now the talk of the town, which is ready to take over as the display technology of the future.

It promises major picture quality improvements, but perhaps more importantly, it will enable entirely new types of products and implementations based on its paper-thin, truly flexible, and transparent properties.
