Historical facts need to be addressed: spokesman on Lien's China trip

Taipei, Aug. 27 (CNA) Anyone attending Beijing's commemoration of the end of World War II should make clear the leading role played by the Republic of China government in the fight against Japan's aggression 70 years ago, a presidential spokesman said Thursday. "The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has reiterated the government's stance, stressing that individuals visiting China should insist on the principle of reciprocity and respect and emphasize the historical fact that the ROC government led the fight against Japan's aggression during World War II," said Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen (???). Chen made the statement in response to former Vice President Lien Chan's (??) planned attendance of China's commemorative activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II next week, which was announced a day earlier. According to former Deputy Secretary-General of the ruling Kuomintang Chang Jung-kung (???), Lien is set to attend a military parade in Beijing on Sept. 3, and hold a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit. Lien is also a former chairman of the KMT. Since its establishment in 1949 after winning China's civil war, the People's Republic of China has inflated the role of Communist forces in resisting Japanese aggression while minimizing the role of the KMT government's forces. In a statement released on Aug. 20, the MAC advised against attending activities held by China to commemorate the end of the World War II. (By Claudia Liu and Angela Huang)
