TAITRA signs pact with U.S. state of Rhode Island (update)

Taipei, Aug. 24 (CNA) The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), Taiwan's main trade promotion body, signed a pact with Rhode Island Commerce Corp. of the United States on Monday to jointly explore trade and investment opportunities. The memorandum of understanding was inked in Taipei by TAITRA Executive Vice President Walter Yeh (???) and Stefan Pryor, Rhode Island's secretary of commerce, who is leading a business trade mission to Taiwan from Aug. 23 to 26. Yeh said the two economies have many things in common, as Rhode Island is famous for its health care services, tourism and manufacturing sector, while Taiwan is also well-known for its health care services and plays a key role in the global supply chain. "Moreover, both of our economies are driven by innovation, and there is huge potential to be tapped into by our cooperation. That is why I believe the MOU is an important milestone in our partnership," Yeh said at the signing ceremony. As Rhode Island's seventh-largest global export market and second-largest Asian export market, Taiwan imported US$90.8 million worth of goods from the state in 2014, putting it ahead of all European countries except Germany. Taiwan's exports to the state totaled US$59.7 million last year, mainly machinery and components, optoelectronic products, medical and surgical equipment, and steel products. In January this year, the Rhode Island government reaffirmed the friendship between the state and Taiwan and commended Taiwan's role as a peacemaker in the East China Sea. The state also urged the signing of a U.S.-Taiwan bilateral investment agreement and a free trade agreement so as to further strengthen Rhode Island-Taiwan trade relations. (By Jeffrey Wu)
