SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) -- At least 14 gang members held at a Salvadoran prison have been killed in violence authorities blame on a conflict within a faction of the Barrio 18 gang.
The communications office of the government prison system said the 14 were found Saturday at the Quzaltepeque facility, 15 miles (25 kilometers) northwest of San Salvador.
Dozens of journalists who tried to reach the prison were turned away by authorities who closed access to the area.
Hato Hasbun, secretary of strategic affairs, told state Radio Nacional that the deaths are the result of "internal problems within the gang."
The Barrio 18 faction known as the Revolutionaries are blamed by the government for recent attacks on bus drivers who refused to honor the gang's demand a suspension of public transportation.
