Indonesian worker thanks police for saving her from exploitation

Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) An Indonesian worker has expressed gratitude to the police in Hsinchu County for saving her from labor exploitation and confinement by a household employer. "I'm really grateful for the help from the police, which gave me a new lease on life," said Enny (??), 30, during a visit to the Jhubei Precinct of the Hsinchu County Police Bureau on Aug. 20 to give the police a cake. Enny suffered several bone fractures after she fell from a building last December. Her relatives in Taiwan then reported her situation to the Jhubei police, who began investigating her employer, a 36-year-old man surnamed Shen. The police found that Enny was hired as a caregiver but was required to do other tasks such as laundry, cooking and car washing and was not allowed to leave the house. The police made contact with Enny after she fell from her employer's building and was hospitalized. The circumstances surrounding her fall were not known. The Jhubei police, however, contacted the county government's labor department about Enny's case and took legal action against her employer for violating the Human Trafficking Prevention Act and the Employment Service Act. After eight months in hospital, Enny was discharged earlier this month and has found a new job in Taiwan. (By Lu Kang-chun and Jeffrey Wu)
