KMT presidential candidate pledges to hike hi-tech budget if elected

Taipei, Aug. 22 (CNA) Hung Hsiu-chu (???), the presidential candidate of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), said Saturday that if she is elected in January, she would increase funding for research and development in the field of science and technology. Accompanied by Ching-yen Tsay(???), chairman of the the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Hung visited the institute in Hsinchu and was briefed on some innovations such as a fluid-driving lighting system, tactical nozzle lights for firefighters, an umbri-water device, organic light-emitting diodes and the concept of smart building based on the Internet of Things (IoT). She later told the press that she was impressed by the achievements of the science and technology experts. Huang noted that the manufacturing sector has been a driving force in Taiwan's economy, contributing 29.1 percent of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) and employing 30 percent of the workforce. Stressing the importance of hi-tech industries to the nation's competitiveness, Hung said that the government should continue to increase the budget for research and development in science and technology, and provide subsidies to the industries for that purpose.
