Job offer from Israel rumored for Apache officer

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Army said Saturday it did not know about any job offers from Israel for Lieutenant Colonel Lao Nai-cheng, the officer accused of inviting unauthorized outsiders to look at Apache combat helicopters.
Taoyuan District prosecutors announced on Friday they would not charge 15 suspects, including Lao and entertainer Janet Lee, in the case, which provoked widespread concern about security at sensitive military installations.
Lao, the deputy head of the Army helicopter squadron in Longtan, Taoyuan City, invited several civilians, including Lee, their spouses, children and nurses over for a tour of the installation. The case became public when Lee posted pictures on her Facebook page showing her posing in front of and inside the cockpit of an Apache AH-64E.
According to media reports, Israel hoped that after his retirement from the Taiwanese military, Lao could move to the Middle Eastern country and serve as an instructor and adviser for its own Apache unit.
Army sources reportedly said they had not heard such reports, and that Lao was currently serving well in another position in the military while cooperating with the investigation. A regular review scheduled for the end of the year would determine who was cast out of the military, reports said.
If he accepted the offer, he could eventually reveal classified information about the Taiwanese Apache unit and its strategies to China, which had tight military development links to Israel, according to the Chinese-language Liberty Times.
However, the only restrictions written into the law put a waiting period on taking a job in Taiwan’s private sector or in China, and do not mention anything about other countries, including Israel, meaning there could be no legal basis for stopping Lao to accept the eventual job offer.
Lao is reportedly bound to continue serving in the Taiwan military until 2018, though disciplinary action against him in the wake of the current controversy could lead him to be open to new job offers much sooner.
