Eastern Taiwan braces for Typhoon Goni

Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) People in eastern Taiwan are taking precautions in anticipation of destructive weather brought by Typhoon Goni, which is expected to turn northward later Friday and sweep past coastal areas over the weekend. Green Island and Orchid Island off Taitung County in southeastern Taiwan, where storm surges and heavy gusts were being reported, announced school and office closures Friday afternoon. Soldiers were also deployed in eastern Taiwan to deal with potential emergencies and local farmers harvested their crops ahead of the storm. Pomelo farmers in Rueisuei Township in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County said they hoped to pick as many pomelos as possible to meet market demand for the Mid-Autumn Festival on Sept. 27. As of 2:30 p.m., Goni was centered 320 kilometers south-southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving at a speed of 7 kilometers per hour in a north-northwesterly, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The bureau expected the storm to veer north and then northeast beginning later in the day. With a radius of 200 kilometers, the storm's maximum sustained winds were estimated at 173 kph, with gusts of up to 209 kph, the bureau's data showed. (By Lee Hsien-feng and Lee Hsin-Yin)
