Depiction of Mao Zedong at Cairo Conference a big joke: President Ma

Taipei, Aug. 20 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou Thursday reiterated the fact that the Nationalist government was the vanguard during the eight-year war (1937-1945) of resistance against Japan, while the communist party at the time served as an assisting force. President Ma attended the Members' Representative Meeting of the Veterans Association of the Republic of China, which was held to celebrate its 27th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan.
He quoted a speech by former Chinese president Hu Jintao when China celebrated the 60th anniversary of the victory over the war: "The Nationalist government initiated battles at the front line, and the communist party took charge of the rear," saying that the remark was only half-correct, since most attacks where initiated by the Nationalist government, while the communist party only participated in a few of them.
He also said that upon learning the news about the new Chinese film "Cairo Declaration" showing Chairman Mao playing a key role in the meeting, which in fact Mao never attended, "This is a big joke." He added that it is important that people know the fact that the Nationalist government initiated most of the battles during the war is unchangeable, and that people should be humble when dealing with historical facts.
The new Chinese film "Cairo Declaration" has been facing a backlash and ridicule on social media since the release of its trailer and promotional posters attempting to put Mao Zedong at the center of a Second World War summit which he never attended. (By Claudia Liu and Angela Huang)
