One-day Salary Donation event kicks off to help underprivileged

Taipei, Aug. 20 (CNA) The nonprofit organization, United Way of Taiwan (UWT), kicked off its annual fundraising event "One-day Salary Donation" on Thursday to help improve the lives of the disadvantaged and promote social equality..
Chu Tzu-pi, secretary general of UWT, said that since it began in 1992, this campaign has brought a glimmer of hope to more than 1 million underprivileged and over 800,000 disadvantaged families each year. The general fundraising effort in the first half of the year did not meet expectations due to slow economic growth and donations being channeled to victims of major disasters, which led to a contraction of UWT's resources, according to Huang Chiu-ping, deputy director of the organization.
She hopes the goal of raising NT$10 million (US$307,688.95) can be achieved with the One-day Salary Donation campaign in order to continue UWT's social welfare service.
To make the event more accessible to a wider audience, UWT launched an interactive website (http://uwt.unitedway.org.tw/2015onedaywithlove/index.html) for people who donate online to see exactly how many people their donation can help.
Through promoting the tenets of "Give", "Advocate", and "Volunteer," the United Way of Taiwan has looked for effective solutions to urgent issues in Taiwan and has strived to help make the country a more philanthropic society since its founding here in 1990. (By Lung Pei-ning and Chloe Hsu)
