Typhoon Goni may affect Taiwan this weekend

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) Typhoon Goni may affect Taiwan during this weekend and the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) is to issue its first sea warning for the tropical cyclone either on the evening of Thursday or on the morning of Friday, if the current forecast of the typhoon's movements are correct, the meteorological agency said Tuesday.
As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, Goni was some 1,400 kilometers east-southeast of Eluanbi, the southernmost tip of Taiwan, moving at a speed of 26 kilometers per hour becoming 20 kph in a westerly direction, according to the bureau.
With a radius of 180 kilometers, the storm's maximum sustained winds were estimated at 173 kph, with gusts of up to 209 kph, the bureau's data showed.
Typhoon Goni is expected to change its current direction on Friday, moving northward along Taiwan's eastern coast, the CWB forecast, adding that the storm will move to a point closest to Taiwan between Saturday and Sunday.
