President thanks wartime allied forces, foreign 'benefactors'

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday thanked the allied forces and foreign civilians who assisted the Republic of China during its eight-year (1937-1945) war of resistance against Japan, calling them "benefactors" of the R.O.C.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of the war against Japan and the government has invited descendants of the Soviet Volunteer Group, Flying Tigers and other allied airmen and soldiers to Taiwan to thank them for helping the R.O.C. through a difficult period, Ma said. In addition to the allied forces, several foreign businesspeople, missionaries and doctors also provided assistance to the R.O.C. during the war and are its benefactors, Ma said at the premiere of a documentary about the R.O.C. Air Force during the war.
He said Taiwan should express thanks to these friends. "We are a nation that values history and friendship," he said.
The documentary "The Rocking Sky", which was jointly produced by the General Association of Chinese Culture and CNEX, premiered at Taipei Zhongshan Hall. (By Hsieh Chia-chen)
