Pre-negotiation talks on cross-strait trade pact set for Beijing

Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) A Taiwanese delegation composed of representatives of different government agencies will fly to Beijing on Tuesday to attend a pre-negotiation meeting on a planned cross-strait trade in goods agreement. The delegation will be headed by David Hsu (???), deputy director general of the Bureau of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The discussions to be held in the upcoming meeting will be centered mainly on technical issues concerning the definition of four major industrial sectors -- petrochemicals, LED displays, automotive and machine tools -- and agriculture, as well as developing a list of products to be given preferential tariff treatment, Hsu said. Taiwan will try to seek a reduction in tariffs on cross-strait trade in flat-panel displays in the upcoming meeting in Beijing, Hsu added. Hsu admitted, however, that it was unlikely that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will achieve a consensus on a cross-strait trade-in-goods agreement by the end of the year.
