High level cross-strait meeting to be held later this month

Taipei, Aug. 17 (CNA) The top negotiators of Taiwan and China will lead their respective delegations to a meeting in Fuzhou in southern China on Aug. 24 to 26 to sign agreements on tax cooperation and aviation safety. Lin Join-sane (???), chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), will depart for Fuzhou on Aug. 24 and meet with his Chinese counterpart, Chen Deming (???), president of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) the next day, SEF officials said Monday. It will be the 11th such meeting since the inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou in May 2008 between the top leaders of the two bodies, which were set up by Taipei and Beijing to discuss key issues and negotiate agreements in the absence of official ties. One of the agreements Lin and Chen are expected to sign on Aug. 25 concerns double taxation and other tax cooperation issues, and the other will deal with aviation safety issues, including "fit-for- flight" standards, according to an SEF press release. Lin is also scheduled to meet Zhang Zhijun (???), head of the Chinese State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office on Aug. 25 before heading back to Taiwan the next day. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan's main agency responsible for China policy, will hold a briefing on the upcoming SEF-ARATS meeting on Tuesday. (By Chang Shu-ling and S.C. Chang)
