Prosecutors step up bribery crackdown months ahead of election

Taipei, Aug. 16 (CNA) Prosecutors will form groups to investigate and crack down on bribery and violence in an effort to ensure a clean general election in January next year, prosecutors said Sunday. The Supreme Prosecutors' Office and district prosecutors' offices are expected to form the groups the following day. Fierce party competition is expected in the election run-up, and the prosecutors will work closely with police and investigators to carry out anti-bribery measures, according to the Taipei District Prosecutors' Office. Prosecutors might even be stationed at police stations as the election approaches and election campaigns heat up, according to the office. The elections, set for Jan. 16, 2016, will elect the 14th-term president and vice president, as well as members of the 9th Legislative Yuan. (By Liu Shih-yi and Christie Chen)
