Heavy rain warning issued for regions south of Hsinchu

Taipei, Aug. 16 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Sunday issued a heavy rain warning for regions south of Hsinchu County and warned of rock and mud slides, as well as flooding, in these areas.
People in Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin and Nantou in central Taiwan and the outlying county of Penghu, as well as in mountainous areas south of Chiayi County in southern Taiwan should stay on high alert aginst potential disasters that might be caused by the heavy rain -- defined as 50mm or more in 24 hours, the bureau warned.
Meanwhile, two people were resuced after being trapped for hours in a creek in Taichung's Taiping District.
The two were trapped in Toubiankeng Creek near the Changxing Bridge in Taichung, prompting a rescue effort by 17 firefighters.
As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua and Chiayi have experienced the heaviest precipitation, the bureau reported. Some 50mm-85mm of precipitation was reported in three hours in Dahu, Zhuolan and Sanyi townships in Miaoli County, Heping, Dongshi and Taiping districts in Taichung, and Lukang, Puyan and Fuxing townships in Changhua County in central Taiwan, according to bureau data. Meanwhile, some 58mm-64mm of rain was reported in one hour in Fanlu Township in Chiayi County, according to the CWB. (By Wang Shu-fen, Hau Hsueh-ching and Kuo Chung-han)
