Negotiations on foreign maids' wages likely in late August

Taipei, Aug. 16 (CNA) Discussions on raising the pay of foreign domestic maids could be held between Taiwan and its main supplier countries by the end of the month, the Ministry of Labor Affairs said on Sunday. After a wage freeze that has lasted 18 years, talks are slated to begin with Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam later this month through formal bilateral channels established with each country, the ministry said. The monthly wage of foreign domestic helpers could be raised to between NT$16,840 and NT$17,500 (US$545) from the current level of NT$15,840, the ministry estimated. Deputy Minister of Labor Affairs Hao Feng-ming (???) said on Saturday that if a hike is introduced, the new monthly wage will apply to newly arriving foreign workers this year, while wages for those already in Taiwan will be coordinated with employers. Asked what will happen if negotiations fail, Hao said the ministry would consider cutting the number of imported foreign workers or looking for new sources of foreign labor. Labor ministry statistics show that as of the end of January 2015, there were 556,412 migrant workers in Taiwan, with 208,486 employed as caregivers or home help. (By M. S. Chang and Flor Wang)
