Tropical storms Goni, Atsani formed off Guam: CWB

Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) Tropical storms Goni and Atsani were formed early Saturday on waters off Guam and a strengthening Goni could have an impact on Taiwan next week, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Saturday. On their current paths, Goni could be steadily heading toward Taiwan to the west, while Atsani could turn northward on Aug. 19, bureau data showed. Having the potential to threaten Taiwan, Goni could continue picking up strength and develop into a typhoon because the environment is favorable for its development, forecasters said. Goni's outer rim could begin introducing rain to the country on Aug. 21, but whether it will have a direct impact on Taiwan will be clearer on Aug. 18, the bureau said. As of 2 a.m. Saturday, Goni was centered 3,050 km east-southeast of Hualien, moving at a speed of 9 km per hour in a northwesterly direction, the bureau said. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts reaching 90 kph, it said. Atsani was centered 4,300 km east-southeast of Taipei, showing little movement to the west-northwest, the bureau said. It was also packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts reaching 90 kph, the bureau said. Goni is the Korean word for swan while Atsani means lightening in Thai. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
